MANUEL
BANDEIRA
« Manuel Bandeira has become used to receiving awards.
As an architecture student he won prizes in both Italy and Brazil for the prototype of the Contorno chair, inspired by an avenue in the city of Salvador da Bahia. After graduating in 1998, one of his projects was selected and he received an honorary mention at the XII Museu da Casa Brasileira Awards, São Paulo.
Bandeira obtained his master's degree in industrial design from the Domus Academy, Milan, where five of his projects received awards, including his packaging for Baci Perugina chocolate and a furniture piece for the Promosedia exhibition in Udine, Italy. He became assistant professor at the Domus Academy and took up an offer to work at designer Marc Sadler's Novus studio, where he designed home appliances for Moulinex. In 2001, having returned to Brazil, Bandeira created the Água chair (2001) in close collaboration with the furniture industry. His most intriguing projects are Sequinha" (an ingenious underwear dryer) for its creative concept and simplicity, and the Levita Chair, both designed in 2003 and given Museu da Casa Brasileira Awards.
Bandeira does not have a defined style and is not concerned with having one. His products always reflect the search for a coherent design, be it from the formal, functional or constructive point of view. 'I do not seek an aesthetic result.
It appears from an equation involving the constructive process, its use and my fantasy. As a formula for my creations I combine simplicity and practicality resulting in forms expressing my life experience,' he explains. Bandeira's confessed influences are his passion for sailing boats, and his admiration for Marcel Duchamp and Achille Castiglioni. With seductive, provocative and refined designs, Bandeira attributes new values to traditional products, or simply teases us by questioning certain habits or manners».
